چکیده

We analyze the performance of TCP and TCP with network coding (TCP/NC) in lossy wireless networks. We build upon the simple framework introduced by Padhye et al. and characterize the throughput behavior of classical TCP as well as TCP/NC as a function of erasure rate, roundtrip time, maximum window size, and duration of the connection. Our analytical results show that network coding masks random erasures from TCP, thus preventing TCP’s performance degradation in lossy networks (e.g. wireless networks). It is further seen that TCP/NC has significant throughput gains over TCP. Our analysis and simulation results show very close concordance and support that TCP/NC is robust against erasures. TCP/NC is not only able to increase its window size faster but also to maintain a large window size despite the random losses, whereas TCP experiences window closing because losses are mistakenly attributed to congestion. Note that network coding only masks random erasures, and allows TCP to react to congestion; thus, when there are correlated losses, TCP/NC also closes its window.

TCP / IP Modeling and Validation

he modeling of TCP congestion control is an important task for improving the service provided to Internet users and the efficiency of network resource utilization. Its importance is due to the large amount of TCP traffic in the Internet: 95 percent of total bytes and 85–95 percent of total packets are of the TCP type [1]. A TCP source controls the rate of application packets as a function of th...

In ACM SIGCOMM'98 Modeling TCP Throughput: A Simple Model and its Empirical Validation

In this paper we develop a simple analytic characterization of the steady state throughput, as a function of loss rate and round trip time for a bulk transfer TCP ow, i.e., a ow with an unlimited amount of data to send. Unlike the models in [6, 7, 10], our model captures not only the behavior of TCP's fast retransmit mechanism (which is also considered in [6, 7, 10]) but also the e ect of TCP's...

Evaluating Multipath TCP Resilience against Link Failures

Standard TCP is the de facto reliable transfer protocol for the Internet. It is designed to establish a reliable connection using only a single network interface. However, standard TCP with single interfacing performs poorly due to intermittent node connectivity. This requires the re-establishment of connections as the IP addresses change. Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) has emerged to utilize multiple ...

Parallel Tcp Data Transfers: a Practical Model and Its Application

The TCP protocol is the most used transport protocol in the Internet today. Since its first definition in 1981 and extension in 1988, when congestion control was added, the essence of its behavior has not changed. During the last years, network technology has been developing fast and TCP has begun to experience its limitations. One single standard TCP flow is not able to fully utilize modern hi...
